Sophie Cunningham fell short of her goal of standing out in last season’s WNBA campaign. An injury knocked her out of competition, and she is still recovering. While away from the court, she has focused on her podcast and her health to ensure she returns to the league at full strength.
Recently, the Indiana Fever guard revealed her plans for the offseason. She is currently back in Phoenix, but not for long. Cunningham’s top priority is her physical rehabilitation and mental preparation before stepping on the court again.
A rehab-focused break
According to EssentiallySports, West Wilson, co-host of her podcast Show Me Something, asked Cunningham about her stay in Phoenix and whether she planned to remain there. Cunningham replied:
“Yes and no. I’ll still be here because I’m doing most of my rehab here. But living here and having a place here — no.”
She also hinted at where she sees herself next: “It’s about where I’ll be next. When you’re not filming, you’re in the offseason, and New York is the perfect hub for everything. But I don’t want to deal with the cold. So I’m somewhere between Missouri and Florida — kind of my own triangle. Technically, I’m not signed with Indiana.”
Her statement makes it clear that her plans for 2026 lie outside Indiana. While she is open to returning, she plans to listen to other offers. However, with the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the CBA, the WNBA free-agency market remains wide open.
One major advantage for Cunningham is that she doesn’t rely on overseas basketball income. Her earnings come from multiple sources, so she isn’t stressed about the CBA timeline. Right now, her main objective is fully overcoming her injuries and returning healthy.
