The 2025-26 NBA season is about to begin, but the Los Angeles Lakers will have to do it without their biggest star. LeBron James won’t be on the court for the season opener against the Golden State Warriors on October 21. As previously reported, the forward has been sidelined throughout the preseason due to a sciatic nerve injury. The news, while concerning, comes with a glimmer of hope. According to journalist Shams Charania, as cited by Marca, the King is expected to return by mid-November.

At 40 years old, LeBron James remains the emotional and competitive engine of the Lakers. Last season, he played in 70 games, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds. With a field goal percentage of 51.3%. Far from showing signs of decline, those numbers confirm that the veteran still has plenty of fuel to lead on both ends of the floor. This time, however, the team’s medical staff is taking a conservative approach: no rushing, just a full recovery.

In recovery mode

The injury, located in the right sciatic nerve, has been described as painful and limiting. Although no official medical updates have been released, the treatments appear to be working. LeBron James, meanwhile, has chosen to stay out of the spotlight during this phase. He’s reportedly focused on modern therapies and a personal philosophy that prioritizes physical and mental balance.

The Lakers’ matchup against the Warriors, which promised another chapter in the LeBron James vs. Stephen Curry rivalry, will have to wait. Still, the game remains one of the most anticipated on the schedule. In the meantime, Luka Doncic will take center stage in the Lakers’ offense. The Slovenian star will be key to keeping the team competitive while the King recovers.

Leadership remains intact

LeBron James’ absence at the start of the season affects more than just the scoreboard—it hits the team’s emotional core. His leadership in the locker room and ability to elevate those around him are qualities the Lakers will miss. But the plan is clear: protect him now to have him fully ready for the stretch run, when the games truly matter.

For now, Lakers fans are circling November as the month of his return. Because when LeBron James steps back onto the court, he’ll do it with his eyes on the playoffs—and on writing another chapter in his legacy.
