LeBron James isn’t retiring. But he’s not starting either. The longest-tenured active player in the NBA is facing a new physical setback just before launching his historic 23rd season with the Los Angeles Lakers. At 40 years old, the league’s all-time leading scorer is dealing with a nerve irritation in his glute that has kept him out of training camp and will sideline him for the entire preseason.

According to a report by Shams Charania cited by Marca, the Lakers’ medical staff is monitoring LeBron James’ recovery with caution. There’s cautious optimism that he’ll be ready for the October 21 opener against the Golden State Warriors, but the message is clear: no rush. Head coach JJ Redick, entering his second season with the team, didn’t mince words. “We want to take a long-term approach with his preparation this time,” he said.

A delicate injury

The condition, described as a nerve irritation in the gluteal area, isn’t serious but it’s certainly uncomfortable. And with a body that’s endured over two decades of wear and tear, every detail matters. Redick recalled that during the 2024 camp, LeBron James “overdid it” with his intensity. This time, the plan is to pace him, avoid setbacks, and make sure he’s ready for tip-off at Staples Arena.

Last season, LeBron James played 70 games, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists. In the playoffs, he bumped that up to 25.4 points per game, though the Lakers were eliminated in the first round by the Timberwolves. Despite sharing the floor with Luka Doncic, the team couldn’t advance. Now, with Doncic locked in as the franchise cornerstone after signing an extension, LeBron’s presence will be crucial in shaping both the competitive and contractual future of the organization.

A season full of expectations

With Redick at the helm and the potential return of LeBron James, the Lakers are gearing up for a season loaded with expectations. If cleared to play, the opener against the Warriors will mark his 23rd consecutive season, extending his record for most seasons played. But if he’s not ready, the Lakers will have to prove they can hold their own without their leader on the court.

Meanwhile, the media spotlight continues to orbit around LeBron James. From viral clips featuring his son Bryce to renewed speculation about a “Second Decision,” the King remains the center of attention. But in Los Angeles, what truly matters is that he’s ready to suit up. Because without LeBron, the Lakers’ blueprint loses its backbone.
