Jake Paul can’t let go of Canelo Alvarez. The influencer-turned-boxer has once again placed the Mexican fighter at the center of his ambitions, stating that a bout between them would be “one of the biggest in boxing history.” And while the idea still feels more like provocation than reality, current circumstances might bring that matchup closer than it seemed just months ago.

According to Marca, the fight between Jake Paul and Canelo Alvarez nearly happened back in May. A preliminary agreement was even signed, but Canelo’s commitment to the Riyadh Season in Saudi Arabia shifted the plans. Instead of facing Paul, the Mexican champion fought William Scull, putting the clash with the American on hold.

New negotiations?

Now, after Canelo Alvarez’s surprising loss to Terence Crawford on September 13, Jake Paul believes the timing is perfect to revisit talks. The Mexican boxer is in a period of reflection—not retiring, but still undecided about his next move. Meanwhile, Jake Paul keeps stacking headlines and wins, and is preparing for an exhibition match against Gervonta “Tank” Davis on November 14 in Miami. The fight will be at 195 pounds, well above Davis’s usual weight class, giving Paul a clear physical advantage.

For Jake Paul, beating Davis would be the perfect springboard to pressure Canelo Alvarez’s camp again. “After this guy, Canelo is definitely on the list,” Paul said recently. And while the fight still feels distant, the current landscape makes it more plausible: Canelo needs to reassert his dominance, and Paul is chasing legitimacy. Both have something to gain—and plenty to

lose.

The real question isn’t whether Jake Paul deserves to face Canelo Alvarez. It’s whether modern boxing, increasingly hybrid between sport and spectacle, is ready for that kind of crossover. Because if Paul has proven anything, it’s that he knows how to sell a fight. And if Canelo has shown anything, it’s that he knows how to respond when doubted.

For now, the fight remains a wish. But in boxing, well-placed wishes often turn into signed contracts. And Jake Paul, with his relentless ambition and flair for provocation, doesn’t seem ready to let go of Canelo Alvarez anytime soon.
