Tom Brady doesn’t throw footballs anymore, but every word he delivers from the broadcast booth can hit just as hard as a deep pass in the fourth quarter. The seven-time Super Bowl champion, now Fox’s lead NFL analyst, found himself in an unexpected controversy after a comment he made during the Chicago Bears vs. Dallas Cowboys game.

While discussing wide receiver George Pickens’ frustration—after he slammed his helmet to the ground following a failed play—Tom Brady tried to illustrate the emotional reaction with a line that didn’t land well: “Helmets are like the dog at home. You kick the dog, you throw the helmet, whatever.” The analogy, far from being taken as a sports metaphor, immediately raised red flags among animal advocates and prompted a direct response from PETA.

Statement of rejection

According to Marca, the organization issued a statement expressing its concern over the comment. PETA also reminded the public that millions of people listen to Tom Brady every week. “The language we use can either promote empathy or normalize violence toward animals. We should never treat a beloved companion as an outlet for frustration,” the group stated. PETA also pointed out that Brady has long been seen as someone kind to animals, which made the comment all the more surprising.

The incident quickly went viral on social media. Some users defended Tom Brady, calling it an unfortunate expression with no malicious intent. Others demanded a public apology. So far, the former quarterback has not made any statements regarding the matter.

Pressure in the booth

This episode makes one thing clear: Tom Brady’s role as a commentator comes with its own kind of pressure. Every off-the-cuff remark can turn into a headline, and the margin for error is razor-thin. In his transition from the field to the booth, Brady is now facing a different kind of blitz—the one from public opinion.

While the Cowboys celebrated their win and Pickens processed his frustration, Tom Brady was learning that in today’s NFL, even the shortest comments can spark a storm. And in the age of open mics, every word counts.
