Sophie Cunningham didn’t score a single point in Game 1 of the semifinals between Indiana Fever and Las Vegas Aces. Not because she didn’t want to—but because she physically couldn’t. A torn medial collateral ligament in her right knee ended her season. Still, that didn’t stop her from stealing the emotional spotlight. From the stands, wearing a brace and street clothes, Sophie was more than a spectator—she was the heartbeat of the team.

Indiana Fever stunned everyone with a dominant 89–73 win over the defending champions. Kelsey Mitchell dropped 34 points, Odyssey Sims added 17, and Natasha Howard chipped in 12. But while the box score was being written on the court, Sophie Cunningham was crafting a different kind of story from the sidelines. When the final buzzer sounded, she stood up, clapped, and cheered like she had hit the game-winning three. On social media, she kept it short and loud: “dubs in the chat.”

Hybrid and emotional role

According to Marca, the 29-year-old guard has taken on a hybrid role during these playoffs. She’s a motivator, an emotional anchor, and almost a coach from the bench. “She brings energy even when she’s not on the floor,” said a member of Fever’s staff. Her teammates agree—Sophie Cunningham’s intensity is contagious, and her leadership is undeniable.

The injury didn’t just take Sophie Cunningham off the court—it forced her to reinvent herself. Instead of stepping back, she became a key figure in keeping the team’s competitive spirit alive. At every practice, in every huddle, during every game, her presence is constant. And while she doesn’t show up in the stat sheet, her impact is as real as any rebound or assist.

Leadership that transcends minutes

Game 2 of the series will be played in Las Vegas, and no one doubts Sophie Cunningham will be there—cheering, shouting, and pushing from wherever she can. Because in Fever, leadership isn’t always measured in points. It’s measured in conviction, in effort, in the ability to show up even when the body doesn’t cooperate.

Sophie Cunningham isn’t playing—but she’s playing. And in these playoffs, her voice is proving just as decisive as any move in the paint.
