Jerry Jones defends the Cowboys after blowout loss in Chicago

Jerry Jones isn’t the type to hide after a loss. He doesn’t lower his head when the scoreboard turns against him. After the Dallas Cowboys fell 31–14 to the Chicago Bears, the team’s owner and general manager stepped up to speak—and he did so with conviction. “You saw number 4 today and you saw what we’re capable of in the run game,” he said, referring to Dak Prescott. With that, Jerry Jones made it clear that despite the 1–2 start to the season, he still believes the Cowboys can make a playoff push.

The defeat at Soldier Field left more than just a bitter taste. The defense was easily outmatched. And while CeeDee Lamb received encouraging medical updates after leaving the game banged up, the Cowboys showed cracks that raise concern. According to Marca, Jerry Jones also stated that the team is preparing to take advantage of upcoming matchups.

Years chasing the postseason

The Cowboys haven’t managed to establish themselves as serious postseason contenders in years. Every September begins with promises, and every December ends in disappointment. Still, Jerry Jones insists the talent is there and that progress will come. Brandon Aubrey, the kicker who’s been a pleasant surprise, might be part of that quiet rebuild. Defensive adjustments are also rumored to be on the table in the coming weeks.

Offensively, the Cowboys show flashes. Prescott remains the centerpiece, and the ground game is starting to show signs of life. But defensively, urgent fixes are needed. The margin for error in the NFC East is razor-thin, and teams like Philadelphia and San Francisco aren’t waiting for Jerry Jones’ Cowboys to get their act together.

Fan pressure builds

Jerry Jones, who has owned the team since 1989, knows pressure is nothing new. But he also knows the fans’ patience has limits. In Dallas, expectations aren’t negotiable. And while the optimistic speech returns every year, this time the clock seems to be ticking faster.

The 2025 season is still in its early stages, but the Cowboys are already backed into a corner. Jerry Jones hasn’t let go of the reins. The question now is whether the team will respond before it’s too late.
