The saga of Shedeur Sanders and the Cleveland Browns seems to be entering its final chapter—or at least that’s what recent rumors suggest. Sanders, son of the legendary DeionCoach Prime” Sanders, is locked in a fierce battle for the starting quarterback role in Cleveland’s offense. That much is clear. But recent moves by the team point toward a possible trade that could take him off the board before the season even begins.

During training camp, Shedeur Sanders has had standout moments. He’s shown accuracy and leadership in several reps. However, his recent absence due to arm soreness has raised eyebrows. Former Packers quarterback Kurt Benkert didn’t hesitate to suggest on social media that these kinds of situations often precede a trade. “This is what they do before moving someone,” he commented in response to an ESPN report.

Intense internal competition

According to outlets like Sportskeeda, the internal competition hasn’t given Shedeur Sanders much breathing room. Rookie Dillon Gabriel, selected in the third round of the 2025 Draft, has been getting more reps and seems to be gaining ground in the QB race. The Athletic also reports that Gabriel is currently ahead of Sanders on the team’s depth chart. Despite his inconsistent performance and several inaccurate throws. Still, head coach Kevin Stefanski appears willing to give Gabriel a shot.

Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders also has to contend with veteran Joe Flacco, Super Bowl XLVII champion, who has emerged as a solid option to start the season—especially after Kenny Pickett, who was expected to be the starter, went down with an injury. Flacco brings experience and stability, something the Browns value in the midst of uncertainty.

A crowded quarterback room

The truth is, Cleveland’s quarterback room is more crowded than ever. That’s why there are strong indications that Shedeur Sanders could be the one to go. His last name carries weight, and his talent is undeniable. But the competitive context and strategic decisions by the team have left him in a vulnerable position.

Sportskeeda also notes that the Browns are considering moving Shedeur Sanders after camp, aiming to reorganize their roster and free up space in a position overflowing with options but lacking clarity.

For Shedeur Sanders, this could be a turning point. His time at Colorado under his father’s guidance made him a media sensation. But in the NFL, a famous name doesn’t guarantee playing time. If a trade does happen, it’ll be a new opportunity—because the kid clearly has talent.
