During a training camp session for the Kansas City Chiefs, a fight broke out between two players. Travis Kelce immediately took charge of the situation and assumed a leadership role that greatly helped to calm the tension.

This is a fairly normal occurrence in NFL training camps. However, it’s always important to have players who can act as a stabilizing force for the team. In this case, Andy Reid has Kelce.

A fight that could have escalated

According to Marca, the altercation took place on Tuesday, July 29, between defensive end Ashton Gillotte and offensive lineman Josh Simmons. The fight was witnessed by everyone on the field, but the first report came from KCTV5 reporter Mark Pooulose.

In the video, Travis Kelce is seen stepping in between the two players and stopping the fight. Gillotte had grabbed Simmons’ jersey aggressively, and when Simmons tried to break free, the defensive end lunged forward, prompting Simmons to throw a punch.

The two exchanged more blows until other teammates intervened. Even head coach Andy Reid had to come onto the field to stop what was happening.

Kelce’s actions in this situation reinforce what coach Tom Melvin told Sports Illustrated about the tight end’s role with the Chiefs:
“He’s the ultimate competitor… You hear a lot about his outgoing personality. He prefers to lead by example, rather than through external antics. He’s not going to be a leader because he’s dancing before the snap. He’s going to be a leader because he’s sprinting at full speed and preparing his teammate to succeed.”
