Patrick Mahomes is about to add yet another epic chapter to his professional saga with the Kansas City Chiefs. After only eight seasons in the NFL, the quarterback has racked up 32,352 passing yards. According to outlets like The Sports Rush, Mahomes is just 3,299 yards short of breaking the franchise record currently held by Alex Smith — 35,650 yards. Unless an injury throws a wrench into things, Mahomes could shatter that number before the end of the upcoming 17-game regular season.

And when we say shatter, it’s not exaggeration. Patrick Mahomes averages a jaw-dropping 4,910 passing yards per season. If he keeps pace in 2025, Mahomes would close out the year with more than 37,000 yards, vaulting into 30th place on the NFL‘s all-time list. That would leave Alex Smith far behind in the record books. And analysts are already predicting that Mahomes could be closing in on marks set by legends like Donovan McNabb.

Numbers and legacy

But beyond the stats, what sets Patrick Mahomes apart is the way he’s embraced the legacy passed down to him. Smith never showed envy or hesitation — he welcomed Mahomes with open arms, even inviting him over for Thanksgiving dinner. During those meals — as Smith himself once recalled — he had to remind the young phenom that while his spiral might be razor sharp, slathering ketchup on a quality steak? Absolutely unforgivable.

That anecdote, amusing as it is, speaks volumes. Alex Smith was more than a mentor on the field; he helped shape Patrick Mahomes in ways that went far beyond the gridiron. From quiet leadership to emotional balance after wins and losses, Smith’s influence helped mold the quarterback who now breaks records and leads the Chiefs with poise and personality.

Organic transition

Patrick Mahomes has already led the Chiefs to five AFC championships — and three Super Bowl titles. But what makes this journey exceptional is that it wasn’t built on rivalry with his predecessor. It was built on respect and teamwork. Some analysts even say that the transition from Alex Smith to Mahomes was so seamless, it became one of the greatest torch-passing moments in professional sports.

With 2025 on the horizon, Chiefs fans aren’t just waiting for another record to fall. They’re ready to watch Patrick Mahomes turn every stat into history.
