The player had previously expressed interest in bringing a WNBA franchise to Kansas City. However, the league officially announced three new teams—Detroit, Cleveland, and Philadelphia—shutting out Kansas City, where Patrick Mahomes and other top-level backers had led a solid bid.
It’s worth remembering that Patrick Mahomes already co-owns the Kansas City Current alongside his wife, Brittany—a women’s soccer team that’s racking up success. “It was cool that we were able to bring this women’s soccer team—the Current—to town, and now they’re headed into the playoffs with amazing support,” Mahomes told ESPN late last year.

That momentum is exactly what Patrick Mahomes hoped to carry into a WNBA franchise. But for now, his plan will have to wait: cities like Denver, Houston, Austin, and St. Louis also fell short, leaving Mahomes’s hometown off the expansion map.

Still, he remains steadfast in his mission to boost women’s sports in Kansas City. “I want to keep working with that ownership group to take the next step and bring a WNBA team here,”. It didn’t pan out this time, but expect Mahomes to stay laser-focused on guiding the Chiefs to victory this season.
