Although it’s not official yet, it’s almost certain that Canelo Alvarez will step into the ring against Terence Crawford. This fight would be the second of four lined up by the Mexican’s team with Arab Sheikh Turki Al-Sheikh, and it’s expected to take place in the United States.

However, there’s already a bit of controversy surrounding this matchup between Canelo and Crawford. The fight has certainly made waves in the boxing world, but when it comes to ticket sales, not everyone seems eager to pay to see these two face off in the ring.

Canelo vs Crawford

Former trainer of Golovkin, Abel Sánchez, has weighed in on the matter, and he doesn’t find the Canelo vs Crawford matchup particularly appealing. Sánchez described the fight between these two boxing stars as “ridiculous,” in his opinion.

His reasoning doesn’t stem from questioning the individual talents of Canelo or Crawford. Instead, it’s about their differences. According to him, these are two entirely different types of boxers, and he even admitted he wouldn’t pay to watch them fight.

“The fight he has lined up after Scull (against Crawford) seems ridiculous to me. These are two completely different people. Canelo has taken punches from bigger guys, and nobody has fazed him. So I don’t think this fight should happen. I’ve said it from the beginning, but the money is there for both, so it’s happening. Still, it’s not a fight I would pay to watch,” Sánchez told BoxingNews.

Talents From Different Weight Classes

Sánchez also emphasized that he doesn’t doubt Bud Crawford’s talent. However, he pointed out that Canelo is larger and in a different weight class. For this reason, he warned that the Mexican boxer would likely punish and hurt Crawford.

“I believe so; I believe Canelo will stop him. And it’s not because Terence isn’t talented. Terence is a skilled fighter, but you’re talking about a big man who’s used to fighting other big men. Eventually, he’ll catch Crawford, punish him, and hurt him,” Sánchez stated with concern.

To take on Saul Canelo Alvarez, Crawford would have to move up two weight classes. Although this isn’t new territory for him, as he’s done it before, the concerns are still there.

Next Matchup

In the meantime, Canelo is fully focused on his next fight against William Scull, scheduled for May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Mexican is looking to unify the super middleweight division titles for the second time. The last time the Jalisco native stepped into the ring was in September 2024, when he faced Edgar Berlanga, whom he knocked out in the third round.
