The secret to Mike Tyson’s success in the ring appears to have finally been unveiled. The fighter is globally renowned as one of the most feared boxers of all time. Back in the ’80s and ’90s, he was unbeatable, and his fame turned him into a legend.

While Mike Tyson followed an intense training regimen during those days to overcome and outmatch his opponents, there was a peculiar ritual that seemed to be the key to his boundless energy.

Mike Tyson’s secret

During his competitive years, Mike Tyson stuck to the same meal every day. This ensured his metabolism absorbed all the nutrients he needed for grueling sessions in the ring.

However, the heavyweight revealed in 2019 that there was one unique habit he had before each fight. It involved an unconventional snack, quite unexpected for a high-performance athlete.  Mike Tyson, always marching to the beat of his own drum, went against traditional nutrition advice and fueled his body with sugar.

It seems that just before stepping into a fight—perhaps an hour beforehand—Mike Tyson would eat a chocolate bar and drink orange juice without fail. A somewhat unusual ritual, but it worked for him. Let’s not forget, Tyson was the youngest fighter ever to win a heavyweight title, achieving this feat at just 20 years and 145 days when he knocked out Trevor Berbick via technical knockout.

“Right before. About an hour before the fight, I’d have a chocolate bar and orange juice, just to get a quick sugar rush before stepping into the ring,”  Mike Tyson admitted.

Physical preparation

At 58, it seems Mike Tyson has left these practices behind, which many consider unhealthy. Ahead of his fight against Jake Paul at the end of 2024, Tyson showcased an aggressive and grueling training routine.

“I work six hours a day. I start at 11 in the morning, and I might leave the gym at 5 in the afternoon,” Mike Tyson told Jimmy Kimmel. He also mentioned that after getting a massage, he moved on to strength and conditioning exercises.

However, by this point, chocolate bars and orange juice didn’t appear to be part of his strict diet anymore. Who knows—maybe this peculiar snack was the secret ingredient he missed to defeat Paul. As we know the legend fell to the influencer.
