Travis Hunter probably didn’t see the intense criticism and comments coming that he’s received in the past few days following his controversial words. The Colorado Buffaloes player landed in hot water because he compared himself to another player.

However, this other player isn’t even from the same sport. We’re talking about Shohei Ohtani, the prodigy from the Los Angeles Dodgers of the MLB. Now, Travis Hunter finds himself at the center of a debate with varying opinions. Some see it as an excess of confidence on his part, while others dismiss the comparison as absurd.

The controversial comparison by Travis Hunter

In the latter group is NFL veteran Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, who didn’t hold back on the topic. According to Johnson, Travis Hunter‘s opinion makes no sense. “Ohtani is in a completely different league.”

Furthermore, Johnson believes the gap between these players is immense. While he acknowledges that Travis Hunter is good, he feels Ohtani’s achievements are on another level. “Hitting a baseball is one of the hardest things to do,” Johnson said, referring to Hunter’s claims and making it clear there is no comparison.

Shohei is a unique player who can pitch magically and hit home runs. Additionally, he’s a major league baseball player in the MLB, where the competition is fierce. Meanwhile, Travis Hunter is still a college player.

Admirable but incomparable

Travisn Hunter’s ambitions with his comparison are admirable but also pretentious, according to the NFL veteran. Comparing the versatility of the Dodgers star to his own is premature. Instead, the young man should aim to achieve his goals through consistency if he wants to reach Ohtani‘s level.

Others have weighed in on the topic as well. Being a valuable two-way player is pure gold and what makes a few notable. However, comparisons between Shohei Ohtani and Travis Hunter have sparked a debate about the physical demands of their respective two-way roles.

Another veteran, this time from the MLB, also shared his perspective. It was Trevor May, who played for the Mets, and he spoke on the matter, saying Ohtani’s excellence is unique. “Sorry, Travis Hunter. I understand what you’re trying to say, but no. Ohtani does it every day. It’s an effort unlike anything else,” May said.

Both athletes are talented. That’s undeniable. However, Travis Hunter may have gone a bit too far in comparing himself to Ohtani. While both have the ability to play in two roles, they do so in very different ways because they’re in sports that aren’t comparable.
