The Dallas Cowboys are in a tight financial situation. Their salary cap space is becoming increasingly complex. Adding to this, Dak Prescott’s injury last season—after signing a $240 million contract—has left the franchise in suspense. Because of this, Jerry Jones sent a strong message to the QB.

To make matters worse, at the end of the 2024 season, Zack Martin announced his retirement, creating yet another problem for the team. Now, it seems like CeeDee Lamb is the only primary option among the wide receivers. Last year, he signed a four-year, $136 million contract extension.

What will Jones’ next move be?

The Dallas Cowboys’ financial situation makes one thing clear to Jerry Jones: he cannot afford to waste the money available to strengthen the franchise. Now, it’s time to plan the next move strategically and aggressively—and this also seems like a clear message to Dak Prescott.

Current rumors suggest that the team will try to negotiate a contract restructuring with Prescott. Will the QB accept such a move? That remains to be seen.

But that’s not all. Jerry Jones also stated that he is looking to sign a young quarterback for the Cowboys. “You know, I think one of our goals is to get a young quarterback in the draft. I don’t know where that will be. That’s why we gave up a fourth-round pick for Trey. It seems like all quarterbacks, even the ones we target in the fourth round, are going in the first,” he said.

What does this mean for Dak Prescott?

Could the decision to bring in a new QB signal something about Prescott’s future? Only the team’s management truly knows. However, it doesn’t seem like an unreasonable move, given Prescott’s injury history in 2024.

It looks like Jones is searching for an alternative in case Prescott isn’t at his best in 2025. This could even be a long-term strategy to secure a young quarterback for the franchise. Are the Cowboys also thinking about Prescott’s future retirement? Only time will tell.
