The sports world is incredibly lucrative, especially in boxing. A recent fight between influencer Jake Paul and legend Mike Tyson proves this point. Despite Tyson losing, his bank account saw a significant boost. Now, the next big blockbuster is the potential showdown between Canelo Álvarez and Jake Paul.

Canelo Álvarez and the million-dollar matchup

There’s been a lot of buzz about the possible fight, with rumors flying back and forth. It seems negotiations have made significant progress, according to ESPN journalist Mike Coppinger on his Instagram.

He confirmed that Canelo Álvarez and Jake Paul are finalizing a heavyweight deal. According to Coppinger’s sources, this fight might already have a date set for May 3rd in Las Vegas, where these two will face off in the ring.

The world will eagerly watch to see who wins, and the payday for both fighters will be substantial. In the past, the Mexican champion declined Jake Paul’s challenge.

“I’m not interested in that fight – with Jake Paul. It’s good that Netflix is involved, but not in those types of fights. I think it’s more spectacle than a real fight. That’s what I think, and that’s why I’m not interested,” said Canelo Álvarez.

It’s believed that the astronomical offer for the fight has made Canelo reconsider.

A weighty battle

As of now, the fight is set to be exclusively streamed on Netflix. The bout will take place in the cruiserweight category (200 pounds), which presents a challenge for Canelo Álvarez as he has to move up in weight class professionally for the first time.

However, from a financial standpoint, the deal is worth the risk for the Mexican fighter. This is a huge fight that generates significant revenue and could be his biggest payday yet.

Although some critics view the match as lacking prestige for boxing, it’s certain to be a media success and a commercial maneuver for everyone involved.

Currently, Canelo Álvarez holds the WBC, WBA, and WBO titles at 168 pounds. On the other hand, Jake Paul comes into this fight with confidence after defeating Mike Tyson.
